JOB SUMMARY

The Engineer is responsible for maintenance, operation, and repair of all vessel electrical and mechanical systems onboard overnight passenger ships. The chief works in conjunction with the Assistant Engineer.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

To perform this job successfully, the employee must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Repair and Maintenance:

	Required to maintain the ship in a state of readiness at all times.
	Oversee and maintain systems including engineering, deck and hotel following preventative maintenance program on daily, weekly and monthly basis with the support of the Assistant Engineer.
	Participate in yearly shipyards.

Supervisory:

	Direct supervision of Assistant Engineer.
	Monitor and counsel work performance throughout the year, and conduct annual written performance evaluations.
	Train any new or relief Assistant Engineers.

Administrative:

	Keep vessel maintenance records, inventories and file trip reports. Make proposals for maintenance and repair projects.
	Maintain up to date logs for all equipment and communicate with Port Engineers frequently.
	Oversee all accounting reports, inventory and requisitions regarding equipment maintenance.

Safety and Security:

	Required to follow company safety and pollution prevention policies and procedures and will request supervisory assistance/guidance when necessary.
	Conduct periodic inspections to ensure that crew observe regulations pertaining to safe vessel operation.
	Prepare the vessel for all U.S. Coast Guard annual drydocks and other inspections.
	Participate in shore side training as required by the company.
	Familiar with the ISM Code and its requirements.
	Familiar with all duties under the company Safety Management System including Emergency Response Activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Must be over 21 years or age, able to go to sea for extended periods of time, possess a valid passport, not be prone to motion sickness, able to provide proof of U.S. employment eligibility, able to pass a post offer physical examination, able to pass pre-employment drug testing per U.S. Coast Guard regulations.

Prefer a Maritime Engineering School Graduate in good standing and/or a Designated Duty License, or equivalent.

Must have at least 2 years experience as engineer on 100 ton vessels.

Should have strong knowledge of diesel propulsion and electricity generation systems. Also should have knowledge of support systems such as fuel centrifuges, air compressors, pumps, hydraulics, water makers, hotel systems, plumbing, refrigeration, heating, and air conditioning.

Personal computer experience: Lotus 123, WordPerfect for Windows beneficial.

Professional demeanor; ability to use appropriate levels of tact and courtesy.

Strong time management skills; able to handle multiple tasks, set priorities and meet deadlines.

Crisis management; work well under pressure, act quickly and decisively using sound judgement.

Communication Skills:

The Engineer will have some passenger contact and must be professional and have the ability to present information and respond to questions. Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Must be able to provide concise and clear reports as required.

Mathematical Skills:

College level

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Licenses, Certificates, Registrations:

	First Aid/CPR Certification - Required
	Engineering license- Preferred
	Fire Fighting Certification - Preferred

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands are describe in a Engineer Analysis sheet available to all applicants pre-hire.

WORK SCHEDULE:

The Engineer works 12 hours per day: approximately 8 weeks on, 4 weeks off rotational schedule.
